The Last Adam - I Corinthians 15:45

I Corinthians 15:45
"And so it is written, "The first man Adam became a living being." The last Adam became a life-giving spirit."

------------

I am reading "The Cost of Discipleship" by Dietrich Bonhoeffer. It is a deep, dry, read but definitely lays out some very well-honed theology. The chapter I am reading now is on "The Body of Christ" and it references this passage in Corinthians. The body of Christ on earth now is the community of believers or the church.  We are in Christ, Christ is in us and Christ is in the church.

The first Adam bore the human race, and the last Adam bears the sins of humanity into resurrection and life.  In other words, the first Adam gave us life on earth and the second Adam (Christ) has given us eternal life in heaven.  The natural body came through the first Adam, the spiritual body was birthed through the second Adam.  And even better yet, the body of the second Adam was a prototype of the spiritual incorruptible body we will receive at the resurrection.

OK, so the devotional was a little heavy today.  To net it out, the bodies we have now are only a shadow of the perfect bodies we will have in Christ at the end.  But until that time, we are already living out our earthly lives in the body of Christ and Christ is living in us.  Take heart that our savior and comforter is with us now and until the end of time!

...and don't forget to love God with all your heart, love others as He does, and use every minute for His will and to His glory!
